Mike Smith AMIRSE
Mike has worked in the Rail industry on signalling since 1972 and specifically in Works Testing and Commissioning since the early 1980’s. He has held an IRSE license for Tester in Charge and Principles Tester.
Mike learnt his testing skills whilst in the Drawing Office and Testing Section of the Nottingham Division of British Rail London Midland Region. He has been involved in a number of major commissionings, many as Tester in Charge. These have included the re-commissioning of the Newton SSI interlockings following the accident, re-signalling of Willesden Junction on the West Coast Main Line. He had a short period in Signalling Maintenance during the late 1970’s.
Following the Hidden Report he took a major role in the development and delivery of the national testing training. He was part of the core team that developed and revised the UK Signalling Works Testing Handbook.
Mike has had a wide experience of various technologies used both in the UK and abroad. He has been the Tester in Charge for the successful commissioning of major projects in the UK, Hong Kong and Indonesia. These have included cab-signalling and on-board train control systems as well as conventional signalling technologies. He has been involved in the definition of Test Specifications for one of the European contractor companies in the ERTMS project.
Mike provides, through his many years experience in Testing and Commissioning, consultancy support to a leading Independent Safety Assessor for projects throughout the world.
